The Women’s Studies Institute (IEM by its Spanish acronym), of the National University, is an academic entity with the mission of "raising awareness, promoting and monitoring implementation of actions that allow for ideological and cultural ruptures in order to achieve gender equality, equal opportunities and rights between men and women at the institutional, national, and regional levels, for the purpose of contributing to the creation of a fairer and more diverse and sustainable society." As part of the XX anniversary of its foundation, IEM will hold the First International University Conference: Genders, Feminisms, and Diversities (GEFEDI). It is intended as a space for reflection, dialogue, and exchange among persons involved with academia, government institutions, civil society, women's and feminist movements, both nationally and internationally, on current trends and positions related to the core issues of the Conference. The Conference will be held at Hotel Crowne Plaza Corobici, in San Jose, Costa Rica, from June 20 to June 24, 2011. To date, renowned national and international personalities have confirmed their participation.
